Darth Maul founded Crimson Dawn as a weapon against the Empire – and Star Wars comics are proving Palpatine should be very worried about it.

Crimson Dawn was founded in the Dark Times before the Galactic Civil War, and it seems to have mysteriously declined. But Marvel Comics’ “War of the Bounty Hunters” event has seen them resurface, no longer under the leadership of Darth Maul – who died shortly before the original trilogy, as seen in Star Wars: Rebels – but under Han’s ex, Lady Qi’ra. Qi’ra appears to be continuing Darth Maul’s mission to transform Crimson Dawn into a force that can challenge the Empire.

The story of Crimson Dawn will continue in an upcoming “Crimson Empire” event, with Qi’ra likely to make extensive use of the network of agents she has been revealed to have planted throughout the Empire.
Doctor Aphra #15, by Alyssa Wong and Minkyu Jung, proves the Empire should be deeply concerned about the secret empire of Crimson Dawn. It seems Lady Qi’ra has spent quite some time collecting artifacts that could potentially be used against the Sith – including ones even the Sith feared. When Doctor Aphra breaks into Crimson Dawn’s vaults, she discovers a legendary Thought Dowser, a relic that belonged to an ancient Force cult known as the Ascendant. This device allowed anyone – even a non-Force-sensitive – to control the minds of those around them. Someone who is strong in the Force would find it crushingly effective. Apparently, the ancient Sith briefly used them for training, but ultimately discontinued using the Thought Dowsers because they considered them too dangerous.

And it seems the time has come for Crimson Dawn to make their move. “War of the Bounty Hunters” has come to a close, setting up the “Crimson Empire” event and seeing Qi’ra ally with the Knights of Ren – and, given the Knights of Ren potentially include an ex-Jedi, they too may pose a real challenge for the Empire. Crimson Dawn is becoming a major player in galactic events, and – as Star Wars comics are proving – even the Empire should fear them.
